"AY! WHAT IS THAT!?"

SOOO… My mom walks into my room wanting to use my laptop. It was pretty dark and most of the light in my room was coming from my laptop. As I hand my laptop to her, she notices the glistening piece of metal on my lip. First words out of her mouth, you ask?

“AY WHAT IS THAT!?!?!!?”

Her eyes widen and bulge out of her eye sockets as she stares at the ring in disbelief. “AW SHIT!” is the only thing that runs through my mind.

“What is that!?” she repeats. I take off the ring and say “Nothing…” in the sarcastic tone that I love to do.

She grabs my face, stares at the spot where the ring once was, says something in tagalog and laughs. She walks to her room and tells daddy. I see Sandy in the laundry room laughing.

My mom tells my dad “Ay did you see that!? She has an earring on her lip!”

“I told you so” is all my dad says because I know he’s seen me with it before but just doesn’t want to say anything to me.

Sandy walks into my room and we both have a laugh when my mom calls me to her room “Show it to daddy. Look at that!”

We all laugh. All is well. I can’t believe they’re taking this so well. It’s surprising but such a relief. Now, I don’t have to hide it anymore. :)
